Have you ever had some trouble deciding which should be your next holiday destination? It’s not always easy making that choice and deciding what’s the best way for you to spend a couple of weeks off during your holidays. And when instead you are going on a volunteering trip, gap year experience, career break, or summer course, it’s even harder. It involves not only looking into the right volunteer organisation so to make sure you will be perfectly safe, supported, and will have the opportunity of making a real impact; it also involves making the decision on what’s the best project for you to join and in which destination!
And that’s where the experts come in! At World Volunteering we proudly offer lots of projects and volunteering opportunities for you to join worldwide, and each location hast its own special twist! In this blog our World Volunteering experts will guide you through some of the main reasons you should volunteer in Latin America. Here are some of them!
1. LATIN AMERICA IS THE MOST UNEQUAL REGION OF THE WORLD
I believe that actually sums it up and it’s not only the main reason we suggest volunteers to join us in Latin America, but it’s also the main reason why we work there and keep regularly looking into starting new meaningful, professional and sustainable projects so to aid the local communities.
Although income inequality has fallen in recent years, Latin America remains the most unequal region in the world. In 2014 the richest 10% of people in Latin America had amassed 71% of the region’s wealth. If this trend continues, according to Oxfam’s calculations, in just six years’ time the richest 1% in the region will have accumulated more wealth than the remaining 99%!!!
And that’s actually why we’ve decided to open projects in these locations so to create a bigger impact and help reduce that gap. Volunteers are not only welcomed, but needed to make a meaningful contribution in this region.
2. ENJOY SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR AND UNIQUE ATTRACTIONS
So this part could take a while and could actually be a blog by itself, but Latin America has some of the most diverse and unique touristic attractions that are a must see for everyone!
And when besides volunteering and making a meaningful impact, at the same time you get the opportunity of visiting some of the most unique places in the world, even better!
For instance Latin America hosts 2 of the 10 best destinations to visit according to Lonely Planet and has over 135 world heritage sites including cultural and natural ones, as per confirmed by the UNESCO!
And the best part of is that in the same region you get to visit so many diverse sites such as the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in Peru, the Majestic Iguassu Falls in Argentina and Brasil, historical cities such as Havana and Cartagena, the Salt Flats in Bolivia, mind blowing beaches and coral reefs as the ones in Mexico and Belize, Pre-Hispanic ruins, the Amazon Jungle, and we could go like this forever!
You can find the biggest cosmopolitan and vibrant cities, desserts, jungles, glaciers, huge mountain chains, small colonial towns, beaches, islands, great adventure activities for the adrenaline junkies and the greatest wildlife! And by the way, the culture and celebrations are something very unique you can’t miss.
3. TRY THE LOCAL DELICACIES
Being that Latin America is such a huge, diverse and cosmopolitan mixed region, it makes sense that it also provides some of the most unique and greatest dishes and drinks worldwide! As mentioned before, you can go from the ocean, to the mountains, the jungle or the dessert in the same region, and therefore you can find so many different spices and ingredients that would turn our meals into a real pleasure!
From the Argentinean asado and empanadas, to the Feijoada in Brazil, Ropa Vieja in Cuba, curanto in Chile, Arepas in Colombia and Venezuela or Ceviche in Peru, there’s always something that will surprise you! And trust me this is only the beggining!
And for those with a sweet tooth, there’s something else you can’t miss: dulce de leche! This sweetened condensed milk can be found in Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and some parts of Colombia and Venezuela. Once you've tried it you'll feel like you can no longer live without it! You can also have some in other Latin countries such as Colombia and Venezuela where it's known as arequipe or Chile and Peru where they call it manjar or manjar blanco.
We could also make a special chapter about the drinks you need to enjoy while there! And the greatness about the traditional latinamerican drinks is that in each country you can enjoy them in an outstanding setting! Whether it’s a glass or red Malbec in Argentina by the mountains, a caipirinha by the beach in Brazil, a Mojito while walking through the streets of Havana, or Pisco by the ocean in Chile and Peru, there’s always a specialty drink for you!
