Assist in the long-term conservation of the endangered jaguar while living in the rainforest on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Jaguar numbers have declined devastatingly in the last 50 years because of habitat destruction by human activity, and, by choosing to become a wildlife conservation volunteer in Costa Rica on this project, you can help to protect them from further decline. You’ll study the habits of the jaguar population by tracking and monitoring their movements, their prey and their feeding patterns. You won’t get a better opportunity to see these elusive big cats in the wild, and while you’re living on the research station in Tortuguero National Park, you’ll gain a holistic understanding of the incredible ecosystem that is the rainforest on the edge of the beach.

26. jaguar prints on the beach

As a volunteer you'll get to:

  • Live and work in one of the most biologically diverse parts of the world, in a rainforest on the edge of the coast.
  • Set up and monitor camera traps to track jaguar movements.
  • Study the behavior of jaguars in their natural habitat.
  • Survey a 16-mile stretch of turtle nesting beach for signs of jaguar predation on sea turtles.
  • Learn about the importance of conservation in protecting vulnerable species.
  • Conduct biological assessment surveys in a number of species’ habitats.
  • Make friends for life by living and working alongside like-minded international volunteers in this remote part of the world.
  • Receive training in a number of scientific techniques and field research processes.
  • Assist in other research projects taking place on the base, such as studying bird species and monitoring turtle nesting.
  • Explore the surrounding areas of the beautiful country of Costa Rica.

Work & Impacts

Monitoring

MONITORING

Using remote camera traps, you will assist in keeping track of jaguars’ movement and their feeding patterns, as well as of their prey. You will also survey the stretch of beach on which jaguars tend to wander by night, particularly during turtle nesting season.

Data processing analysis recording

DATA PROCESSING, ANALYSIS & RECORDING

You will be trained in using scientific techniques to collect biometric data of the jaguars and any other species you will be studying. This is excellent, hands-on training for a future in the sciences, especially in environmental conservation.

The data you’ll collect is also critical for informing government policy on jaguar conservation.

Handson work

HANDS-ON WORK

You will learn how to set up camera traps to record the jaguars’ behavior patterns. There may also be the opportunity for you to get hands-on experience with various other forms of wildlife in the rainforest and on the beaches, particularly sea turtles.

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

Relax on base

RELAX ON BASE

Your work will be physical and challenging, so in your down-time you will enjoy the opportunity to “chill out” on the base with your fellow volunteers and the long-term project staff – or alone, if you choose. You won’t be able to do much wandering or walking around outside of the base because of safety issues, but when you’re not in the rainforest on duty, you will relish the chance to get off your feet.

Visit tortuguero town

VISIT TORTUGUERO TOWN

There are some delightful craft shops and a very enticing bakery where you can while away your downtime while on-project.

Take a trip

TAKE A TRIP

Your options for adventures off-base include hiking in the mountains; snorkeling in the Caribbean; fishing in the freshwater lagoons and rivers; taking a zip-line tour in the forest; and whitewater rafting on the infamous Pacuare River.

Soak up caribbean vibes

SOAK UP CARIBBEAN VIBES

If it’s laidback leisure time you’re after, you’ll be spoiled for choice with the tiny beach villages in the southern part of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Puerto Viejo, for example, is favoured by surfers looking for great waves and easy-going nightlife.

About Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

About tortuguero national park costa rica

About the Destination

Tortuguero National Park is located in the Caribbean province of Limón, Costa Rica’s most culturally diverse province.

The research station is in a remote area of the rainforest, with limited access to and from the nearest towns. All transport is by boat and canoe on the green canals – the base is a one-hour boat journey away from the nearest shops, phones and internet facilities. This is a full-on jungle adventure!

The accommodation at the base is safe and comfortable, and usually shared. Camp duties are shared by rotation between all members of the team, lending to the sense of cooperation and camaraderie at the station.

You’ll be surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest, and within a stone’s throw of isolated Caribbean beaches. If you’re longing for an escape to the wilderness in one of the most beautiful places on Earth while doing valuable conservation work, this is the project for you – especially if you love the rain and don’t mind getting dirty!
