Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire and it’s the gateway to the sanctuary-city of Machupicchu, one of the new 7 wonders of the World, and a must visit destination! Cusco is located in the south eastern Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level (11,000 feet).
It is definitely one of the most spectacular highlights of South America, and an ideal tourist destination for all of those interested in history, culture, ancient civilizations, as well as adventure and the outdoors! You will find ornate cathedrals, Inca temples, cobblestone streets, llamas and alpacas, and archaeological sites.
Although Peru is one of the world’s richest countries in terms of natural resources, it’s social development has not kept pace with its commercial development. It is a safe country, but visitors are often taken aback by the tremendous differences in socioeconomic levels and lack of access to education and healthcare. This is an ideal place for international volunteers to get involved, contribute to sustainable programs, and provide help to vulnerable populations.
Volunteers will be staying in a traditional family-stay where you will share a room with 1-3 other volunteers of the same sex. Our host families live in Cusco and are approximately a 10-20 minute walk or a 5-15 minute bus/taxi ride away from the Plaza de Armas.
